Additionally, he will explain how New York State politics and United State’s economic and foreign policy in the 1800’s impacted the local salt industry, eventually pushing it into oblivion by 1926.

In conjunction with the Syracuse University-South Side Initiative, the Onondaga Historical Association Museum, the Black History Preservation Project, the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, and The Media Unit, “A Local Black History Exhibit” will open Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Onondaga Historical Association Museum and runs through the month of February. The exhibit opens with entertainment by Akuma Roots Finest drummers, Eradication Squad Precision Drill Team, “Any Friends” Youth Choir, and Kuumba Dancers.

What a better way to celebrate Valentine’s weekend than with the following course of true love with “the first couple”? No, not President Obama and Michele, but Adam and Eve, who reveal their innermost feelings, thoughts, and insights through entries in their personal diaries. Treat your sweetie and come visit the Onondaga Historical Association on Sunday, February 15^th at 2:00pm for a valentine from one of America’s greatest humorists, Samuel Clemens’ also known as Mark Twain; a presentation of the heart warming and witty “The Diaries of Adam and Eve”. Extracts from “Adam’s Diary” were first published in “the Niagara Book”, a souvenir publication sold at the Buffalo Worlds Fair in 1893. The setting of Eden is near Niagara Falls, NY with reference to Tonawanda, NY. “Eve’s Diary” was written in 1906, and the two works were published together in one volume for the first time in 1931.

Irene Sargent, writer, critic, teacher, and quite possibly the instigator of The Craftsman magazine, carved out a unique spot in the history of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. Distinguished from other key figures in the movement who were mostly makers involved with design reform, she was instead a historian of art, architecture, and the decorative arts. She was a very important find for Stickley, who needed an expert to articulate his ideas. To celebrate the centennial issue of The Craftsman, Sargent's biographer, Cleota Reed, has contributed an article to Style 1900's celebratory November issue. She will present a paper on the subject in Newport, Rhode Island in September at Salve Regina University's Fifth Annual Conference on Cultural and Historic Preservation, "The Arts and Crafts Movement Reexamined." She will repeat this talk for the Arts and Crafts Society of Central New York. Reed's presentation explores Sargent's unique partnership with Stickley and examines the magazine's critical Syracuse years.

A Mark Twain Valentine: The Diaries of Adam & Eve

A special Valentine treat returns to the OHA! Share that special day with your special someone and funny presentation by America's foremost humorous and observer of the human condition, Samual Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. The celebrated author lived and wrote in nearby Elmira for a time. The waters in New York State became settings for two if his pieces, a tongue and cheek poem telling of a raging tempest on our own Erie Canal and Niagara Falls became the Garden of Eden in the Diaries of Adam and Eve. Clemens performed readings of his works locally as did many writers of the day.

First Female Signatures in 162 Years

FIRST FEMALE SIGNATURES IN 162 YEARS

SYRACUSE MAYOR AND ONONDAGA COUNTY EXECUTIVE MAKE HISTORY

In the tradition of Women’s History Month, on March 9, at 1:00 PM, history will be made at the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) when Mayor Stephanie Miner and County Executive Joanie Mahoney become the first women in 162 years to sign the Mayors’ Autograph Book.

The book, which is housed at the OHA, contains the signatures of every mayor from Harvey Baldwin, Syracuse’s first mayor who signed the book in 1848, to Matthew Driscoll, Syracuse’s 53^rd mayor who signed in 2003. The book also contains the signatures of Onondaga County’s first, and only, two County Executives, John Mulroy and Nick Pirro.

Obviously, in the 162 year history of Syracuse mayors and the 48 year history of Onondaga County Executives, there has never been a woman in either position until Joanie Mahoney’s inauguration in 2008 and Stephanie Miner’s in 2010. Consequently, there has never been a woman’s signature in the Mayors’ autograph book until March 9, when both signatures will make local history.

The brief ceremony is free and open to the public, though seating is limited, so reservations will be required. Please call Karen at 428-1864, ext.312 to reserve your seat for this historic event.

The Salt City's own famed abolitionist, the Reverenced Samuel May hosts a dramatic presentation from Central New York Reads 2009-10 Book Choice March , by Geraldine Brooks. The novel follows the travels of Colonel March, the father of the March Sisters of Louisa May Alcott's, Little Women . Ms. Brooks presents a vivid depiction of the South prior to and during the Civil War through the lives of those he meets. It is appropriate that May introduces and adds insight in the presentation as not only is he fictionalized in the book but also in reality he was Alcott's Uncle. Join the OHA upstagers as they bring selected scenes to life.
